Oxis, an LA bound artist, joined us for their first time in Dallas opening for Magdalena Bay’s Imaginal Mystery Tour. Oxis has been touring with her new album, Oxis 7, featuring songs such as “Jawless,” “Baqui,” and “Piranha.” Oxis’s social media presence shows her style being brought to life almost with their interest in oceanic scenes and industrial-like branding. In an impromptu interview with the artist, I was able to find out more about her process before shows and the thought process behind her music, their inspiration and her eclectic electronic style.
Sruja Peruka: If you would like to say your name, and what do you do?
OXIS: I just go by Oxis and I make music.
How do you feel after performing?
I feel so incredible and overstimulated at the same time.
Do you have anything that you like to prep before performing?
Tonight? I was crocheting, but I have absolutely no consistency, because then I feel like, if I break it, then I’ll
What were you crocheting?
I was crocheting a beanie. All these plane rides are cold as hell.
How has touring been? You prefaced that it was your first time touring?
Yeah, it’s been incredible. It’s testing my exhaustion levels to no avail. But the Magdalena Bay crew is so stunning, and they’re helping me out, and we’re becoming good friends, and I’m already sad it’s gonna end.
To shift towards a little bit about your music, I am a new fan. I just got into your music, and I just wanted to know, what inspires your music? Is there anyone that you look up to, by any chance, that drove you to start making music?
Okay, thank you. First of all, I guess Grimes is a massive inspiration. Like, my first show, I was just sitting on the floor because I watched this video of her sitting on the floor doing a radio show, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. And she’s kind of she just doesn’t really give a fuck. Yes.
What about your style? Like, your Instagram—I did stalk it a little bit—How would you say you came up with your branding ? Was it something that comes naturally to you?
I would say, I’ve always just been incredibly OCD about my aesthetics, and I just steal little bits of everybody around me, my best friends, my family, and, yeah, I just take everything from [what] I absorb.
Would say that would also be inspiration for your music as well?
Yeah, definitely. I think I go by [a] very minimal aesthetic, and I take that into my production as well. And there’s a lot of dark versus light, and silence versus noise, and I think that plays into the aesthetics too.
When did you come into the music space? Did you start at an early age, or was it more recent?
I’ve kind of just been singing forever, and I’ve evolved just my whole life into what I am now. I’ve just always tinkered around with anything.
Are you working on anything new? Are you in the process of making more music? Are you just like chilling? Or are you enjoying the ride?
I’m enjoying it, but I’m always hyperactive, and I’m in the process of releasing my eighth album.
