New Music Roundup 9/9-9/15

This week came with a lot of surprises. Radiohead released an eerie new music video for “Lift,” which leaves viewers puzzled. Needless to say, it’s an interesting video, and I’ve managed to watch it several times over the past few days.

Another surprise this week was a new single from NAO, titled “Nostalgia.” The production is in line with NAO’s signature sound of funky R&B beats with a lot of electronic elements. It’s got strong pop elements that give a strong summer feeling, but the dark, sensual production and sullen lyrics bring in gloomy, longing emotions. It feels like the end of summer, when the weather is slightly more bearable and you start yearning for colder climate.

Ski Mask the Slump God also released a new music video shot by Cole Bennett, the same one who created his music video for “Catch me Outside.” It features a lot of trippy visuals, bright, neon colors, and a mini version of Ski Mask dancing on a table next to some cigarette butts. If none of that is enough to catch your interest, the song itself is incredibly catchy, and his flow is impressive.

The timing for Carly Rae Jepsen’s new music video for Cut To The Feeling couldn’t be more perfect, given the recent claim (discovery?) from screenwriter Max Landis that every single Carly Rae Jepsen song is about the same event. By every single song, he literally means every single song across all of her albums, EP’s, unreleased songs, and even Christmas covers. Despite the grandiose claim, the proof he provides is hard to refute. The music video itself is about half behind the scenes footage, half actual video, which is a pretty unique approach I haven’t quite seen before.

Rostam’s debut solo album, Half-Light, finally dropped, as well as the official release of Ariel Pink’s, Dedicated to Bobby Jameson, which leaked months ago. Other albums include Open Mike Eagle’s Brick Body Kids Still Daydream, and a series of five mini-albums from $UICIDEBOY$.
