FKA Twigs – EUSEXUA

RIYL: Arca, Shygirl, Magdalena Bay, Amaarae Recommended Tracks: Striptease, Sticky, Perfect Stranger

Before I dive into how I perceived this otherworldly piece of art, I wanted to share that I’ve been a devoted fan of FKA Twigs since her release of EP2. Her music moves me in a way that no other artist can, evoking a deep and powerful connection. Her raw expression of love, and the way she conveys it, is profoundly underappreciated and truly electrifying. With collaborations featuring Koreless, Marius de Vries, and Eartheater—and with most songs reportedly written in a bathroom stall during raves—Eusexua is a stunning and artistic journey of creative freedom. FKA Twigs crafted an immersive, one-of-a-kind experience without a moment to pause.

FKA Twigs is a UK-based R&B and experimental art pop artist who creates a striking, overstimulating vision that is both visually and audibly mesmerizing. She pushes the boundaries of self-expression in music, inspiring others to break free from traditional creative norms. From the early stages of her career, she was ahead of her time, embodying the bold persona she once envisioned in past interviews. In a recent conversation with Imogen Heap, she mentioned that in every phase of her career, and with every musical art she releases, she learns a new style of dance. As a professional dancer, she integrates her movement skills into her artistry, finding inspiration from forms like voguing, krumping, and ballet. In her latest album, she explores the human experience, expressing the idea that we are meant to embrace freedom and the liberation of letting go.

Eusexua was like a surge of energy radiating through every part of the body. Each electronic beat hit like a lightning bolt, leaving a permanent, lasting mark. When she began to tease this album in early 2024, her style began to shift into a dystopian, alien-like style. This type of style focuses on a futuristic, metallic and industrial aesthetic, giving it an otherworldly feel. It’s a bit rebellious, challenging traditional norms and unlocking a sense of defiance. This kind of artistry receives questionable criticism, while others view it as something completely out of the box, especially considering the current state of pop culture. She began releasing music videos for tracks from the album, such as “Eusexua,” the first single released in September 2024. The video depicts the monotony of a boring work life, only for her music and creativity to consume her.

Transitioning to favorites from this album, I felt the most alive and driven when Striptease played. It was a powerful experience that I had to replay multiple times to feel that same intensity again. In this song, she says, “watch me flow, lost in my striptease.” Throughout the track, she fully embraces an erotic image, giving in to the movement of her body and the sensuality of her striptease. She conveys that her entire being goes through a transformation as she evolves into something truly transcendent.

One song that sparked controversy when Eusexua was released was Childlike Things, featuring North West. Some people questioned why she chose to feature her and not another Japanese artist, and I wondered if this was all for publicity. There were many artists who could have executed this song differently, but I found it confusing to hear North West speaking in Japanese and referencing her Christian faith, since the album as a whole doesn’t seem to align with any religious themes. Other than that, I honestly found it to be a fun song. North is just an 11-year-old enjoying herself and exploring her creativity, while FKA twigs is stepping into a new phase that feels liberating for her. That said, I do think that the song is very poppy and catchy, which makes it a memorable track.

2024 and now 2025 have truly been standout years for experimental club music, with artists like Charli XCX, Shygirl, and now FKA Twigs leading the charge. It feels like there’s more space offered to let loose and embrace imperfections without fear of judgment. I truly hope this energy continues to flow into upcoming tracks this 2025 year. This album is the perfect soundtrack for an auditor pregame before a rave or party, exactly as FKA Twigs intended it to be.
