June Marieezy – Throw Away Love Songs

RiYL: Nujabes, Erykah Badu, Phil Gerus, Sasha Keable
Recommended Tracks: For U, Ah Ey Uh, Blasé

Alone for Valentines day? No problem; R&B songstress June Marieezy has got you covered. Only a day before the 2/14 holiday, a surprise tweet from the young Marieezy was posted stating that she will drop a set of tracks for all the “lovebirds” in a day’s time. Just in time for St. Valentine. But the themes presented here supplant the hallmark holiday’s motifs of saccharine love, dealing with “bae”, all the other nonsensical euphemisms for affection. No, this is a true production of art and soul, brought to you in a blessed 7-track list which definitely stays true to the vibe that June Marieezy has surrounded herself with in past releases.

Throw Away Love Songs is Marieezy’s 3rd release, and is a pleasant and well grouped repertoire of new-age electronic soul, centered on her spiritualism and the underlying cosmic tone she aims to get across to the listener. What’s nice about this latest EP is its closeness to earth; Where as her previous projects aimed to be lost somewhere in space, the production styles here allude to artists such as Nujabes, and Sasha Keable in tone and lyrical value. June’s partner on this album, Justin de Guzman, does a fabulous job pairing balanced soul chords and harmonies to the singers lovely voice. Also of note is the use of underrated soft rock/jazz drum rhythm’s, which add to the weightlessness the album supplies.

Considering it is a Valentine’s day release, whether intentional or not, the lyrical quality is also as pleasant as the production. I found myself gently swaying to the beats of “Ah Ey Uh” and “Blasé” the most, and even going hard to the banger drop in “For U.” It was nice to hear a variety of sounds on this short selection, which reminded me how June always continues to impress. She has nothing but love for you, so just take an easy listen through the set and you’ll find yourself restarting from track 1 over and over again.

June is back in the Philippines, probably getting further inspiration and living her beautiful life on that side of the world. Aside from music, she’s a great photographer and artist in general, so check out her social networks such as Instagram and Twitter. Also follow her associated label, Deeper Manila, to get a feel of her musical family.

And of course, you can stream and purchase Throw Away Love Songs off her bandcamp here.
